Economic Governance in a Non-Federal EU
Author: Renaud Thillaye
Date:24 July 2013
The most commonly held opinion about the eurozone crisis is that it should lead to greater EU integration. Yet despite all the talk about fundamental design flaws and the need for a federal ‘leap forward’, EU governments and citizens are not ready to pool further sovereignty and resources as a way to strengthen the common currency and to improve the EU’s delivering capacity.

Left without a Future?
Author: Anthony Painter
Date:08 July 2013
Left without a Future? poses a simple question: despite the failure of neo-liberalism, why has the left failed to provide an alternative that resonates? In a context of enormous social and economic change, the centre-left has not found a convincing new governing statecraft. Now it must seek to create a practical new vision in anxious rather than prosperous times.
Democratic Self-Government in Europe
Author: Damian Chalmers
Date:15 May 2013
In September 2012, the Eurobarometer found for the first time that more European citizens considered the EU to be undemocratic than democratic. Responses up to now have focused on how to reform the EU Institutions. This paper takes a different approach. The European Union should only govern when it has democratic authority within a member state.
François Hollande after One Year
Author: Renaud Thillaye
Date:01 May 2013
For many European commentators and politicians, there is no doubt about Hollande’s central shortcoming: he has yet to get real about fiscal discipline and structural reform. France has only itself to blame for its poor performance, unsustainable welfare state and huge, still increasing public debt. This paper takes a different view: the record of the PS-run government is far from being negligible after one year.

The side-lining of Europe 2020 and its worrying consequences. The Europe 2020 Strategy should not be considered as a ‘good-weather strategy’ only.  The EU has to find a sense of purpose again.
