The 'platform economy’ in Europe: lessons for policymakers

The session draws from recent Policy Network research on the future of work. At the heart of the discussion, we will be examining the policy responses to the growth of platforms that continue to drive innovation while supporting the creation of new jobs. The digital economy is at the cutting edge of creating new business models and the event will examine how to approach the changing nature of work.

We will be looking at political and policy responses across Europe, including the UK, western Europe and Scandinavia. The roundtable will bring together representatives from across government, NGOs, think-tanks, trade unions and industry.

  • Charlotte Holloway (chair), policy director, techUK
  • Poul Nielson, former EU commissioner, author of new report “Working life in the Nordic region”
  • Jan Drahokoupil, senior researcher, ETUI, Brussels
  • Ursula Huws, professor of labour and globalisation, University of Hertfordshire Business School
  • Yvette Cooper MP, Labour member of parliament for Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford
