Securing Britain and Europe's economic future

Over the next few months the British government will push hard on an agenda of EU reform and renegotiation. Immigration, welfare and ‘ever-closer union’ are expected to dominate. Yet the EU does not only need political reform: it needs to act convincingly for jobs, growth and investment. A booming European economy and a more integrated single market are clearly in the interests of the UK.

Since the start of the new commission and parliament last year, the EU has rolled out several major pro-growth projects, such as the ‘Juncker’ investment plan, the Energy Union, the Capital Markets Union and the digital single market strategy. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations are also going on. Against this background, this fringe event will address the following questions:

  • Which priorities for economic reform should the UK pursue in Brussels? How can Britain work within the EU to create more and better jobs, growth and investment?
  • Is the current EU economic roadmap enough to deliver more growth, and allow the UK and other European nations to remain key world economic players?
  • Will Britain stay in the European Union? What impact will uncertainty, and potential exit, have on jobs and investment?
