Growth and wealth creation in tomorrow’s Europe: defining the EU’s added value

Six months ahead of the European elections, Policy Network will host an expert seminar on key debates of EU politics on 28 October.

The management of the Eurozone crisis and the debate over the UK’s place in Europe have distracted attention from the most compelling challenge faced by EU member states: the setting-up of more sustainable and resilient growth models in adverse conditions of global competition. In that respect, the EU has become increasingly seen as a hindrance rather than as a facilitator. Yet there is untapped potential for EU initiatives, but this can only work if divergent public attitudes and the diversity of national institutions are better understood.

Three roundtable sessions will successively touch upon the Single Market policy agenda; the balance between free movement and social protection; and the added value of EU financial instruments.

High-level speakers will include David Frost (BIS), Waltraud Schelkle (LSE), Paul Hofheinz (Lisbon Council), John Monks (formerly TUC), Frank Vandenbroucke (Leuven), Reinhilde Veugelers (Bruegel) and Yves Bertoncini (Notre Europe). Anthony Giddens will deliver a keynote intervention.

This seminar is a contribution to the ‘Welfare, Wealth and Work for Europe’ research project supported by the European Commission
