Political Union: What is it? Do we need it? How could it work?

Three years after the onset of the Greek crisis, the focus of attention in Europe has shifted from containing a small scale debt crisis to working out the contours of a political union. What seemed to remain within the boundaries of economic policy-making has quickly spilled over into a make-orbreak existential crisis for the EU. A broad consensus now seems to exist on the need for deeper European integration, yet numerous policy and institutional dilemmas lie ahead.

In this context, Policy Network and the LSE’s European Institute will be co-organising a series of three interactive roundtable seminars between November 2012 and January 2013 on the topic “Political Union: What is it? Do we need it? How could it work?”

As the attached note outlines, the project’s ambition is to shed light on the political and constitutional forces constraining the responses to the Eurozone crisis and to ask how they should be addressed for any emerging political union to succeed.

These events are part of Policy Network's work on The limits of European integration.
