Universities and the growth agenda in a global era

Policy Network, in partnership with UCLAN and the Samuel Lindow Foundation, is hosting roundtable event exploring the role of universities as growth drivers for the UK economy in a global era.

Higher education institutions in much of the UK and continental Europe are increasingly interconnected across the world with a host of powerful global ties and relationships. This will continue to transform the mission and purpose of universities in the future.

The question for policy makers is how can the higher education sector be enabled to reach its full potential, and how can the UK government and the EU maximise the contribution of higher education to growth and quality of life in the decade ahead? The seminar will address the regional agenda and how universities can help to support under-performing regions in galvanizing growth and higher economic performance.

Confirmed speakers include:
Tim Boswell, conservative member of the House of Lords and chair of the select committee on the European Union
Nick Butler, chair of the Policy Institute at King's College London
Malcolm McVicar, vice-chancellor of the University of Central Lancashire
Katie Schmuecker, associate director, IPPR North
Adam Tyson, head of unit for Higher Education and Erasmus at European Commission
