Internationalism in 21st century social democracy

What future for internationalism in 21st century social democracy?

This event will bring together senior politicians, academics and policymakers from across Europe. The objective is to debate how social democrats can reconcile the traditions of cosmopolitanism and internationalism with the alienation and despair that many of their electorates feel due to the forces of globalisation - or indeed Europeanisation.

Organised by Policy Network in partnership with and the party thinktank of the Dutch Labour party, Wiardi Beckman Stichting, and the Brussels-based Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS), the event comes at a crucial juncture for social democrats in Europe: almost everywhere, anti‐political sentiment and inward‐looking populism are on the rise, with centre‐left parties struggling in the face of conservative political narratives and an ever more demanding international environment.

The Brussels programme marks a joint contribution to the Amsterdam Process and Next Left research projects.

The Amsterdam Process

The Amsterdam Process is an ambitious process of reflection and strategic thinking initated by Policy Network, the international centre-left thinktank based in London, and the Wiardi Beckman Stichting, the thinktank for Dutch social democracy. Past events:

- Social progress in the 21st Century, London, May 2011
- Anti-migration populism, identity and community in an age of insecurity, Berlin, Jan 11
- Economic competence and the centre-left, Madrid, Dec 2010
- Revitalising social democracy, Amsterdam, July, 2010
