Policy Network and Fundación IDEAS will hold a one-day conference on the future of the European Union in Madrid on the 26th February 2010. The conference will look at the Spanish presidency of the EU and the passage from the Lisbon strategy to the “EU 2020” strategy designed to enable the EU to make a full recovery from the financial crisis, while speeding up the move towards a smart and green economy.

It will also mark the launch of the Spanish translation of Policy Network's "An EU fit for purpose in the global age: can we rise to the challenge?" synthesis report, giving senior European political figures and experts the opportunity to debate and discuss the policy and political recommendations.

Confirmed speakers include:

Pat Cox, former president of the European parliament, president of the European Movement International, winner of the 2004 Charlemagne Prize for Great European Achievement

Loukas Tsoukalis, president of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration at the University of Athens and special sdviser to Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission

Roger Liddle, chair of Policy Network and was Tony Blair’s special adviser on Europe from 1997-2004

Olaf Cramme, director of Policy Network

Jesus Caldera, vice president of the IDEAS foundation, former minister for labour and social affairs

Carlos Mulas, director of the IDEAS foundation

Juan Moscoso, PSOE spokesperson on European affairs

Diego Lopez Garrido, Spanish secretary of state for European affairs

This conference builds on a research initiative entitled ‘An EU “fit for purpose” in the global age’ organised by Policy Network, in association with the European Institute of the London School of Economics and the ELIAMEP thinktank in Athens.

Three volumes of collected papers on EU policy choices post-2009, together with a comprehensive synthesis report, mark the climax of this project:
