An EU "fit for purpose" in the global age

  • Date(s)
    9 March 2009
  • Location

Examining how the EU can evolve into the next decade in a world of rapid globalisation and economic and financial uncertainty, the first draft of the synthesis report "Options for the EU post-2009 " has been presented and discussed at a high level workshop and public lecture in London.

The event, organised by Policy Network, in association with the London School of Economics’s European Institute and the Hellenic European and foreign policy foundation ELIAMEP, was held in two stages, with a high level workshop followed by a public lecture, and will bring together senior policymakers, academics and government advisers from across Europe to comment on the wider political implications of the options outlined in the report.

The first draft of the synthesis report, “Options for Europe post-2009” can be read here. Informed by over 30 original written contributions and many other presentations made to the EU "fit for purpose" research initiative in events across Europe since its inception in Spring 2008, this substantial report also lays the ground for an expanded three volume publication on these issues in autumn 2009.

The event started with a private workshop about the content and implications of the first draft of the synthesis report. The discussion included all of the initiative’s contributors and seeked to engage with other key policymakers and academics.

Public lecture
Following on from this, the report was presented to and debated by a panel of senior politicians and academics in front of a large public audience.

The key speakers on the expert panel included: David Miliband, secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs; Frans Timmermans, Dutch minister for European affairs; Loukas Tsoukalis, president of ELIAMEP and Policy Network board member; and Stephen Wall, former EU adviser to Tony Blair and UK permanent representative to the EU. The debate will be chaired by Maurice Fraser, senior teaching fellow, LSE.
