Policy responses to the global financial crisis: the view from Chile

  • Date(s)
    28 January 2009
  • Location

Chilean Finance Minister, Andrés Velasco, Sumitomo-FASID professor of development and international finance at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and architect of Chile’s solid fiscal foundations as they face the global economic downturn with over 4% predicted growth, will be joining Policy Network for a breakfast roundtable meeting to debate common approaches to the financial crisis. The meeting will take place on 28 January.

Minister Velasco’s visit to London comes at an important time, with the recent roll out of innovative and wide-ranging fiscal stimulus plans in both the UK and Chile. This will be an opportunity to engage in a vigorous discussion about the options available to like-minded governments from across industrialised countries and emerging economies alike, as the deepening economic downturn takes its toll on rates of employment and levels of prosperity in our societies. How has the world responded to the collapse of the international financial system, and how can national governments soften the blow for the most vulnerable in our societies during these hard times?
