Policy Network, in support of the Public Service Reform Group, organised a private launch of the new publication Public Matters: the Renewal of the Public Realm, held at the Royal Society of Arts on Wednseday 23 May at 6pm. The launch brought together high-level politicians and academic thinkers to debate the future form of public services in a post-Blair Britain and address the innovative new approach proposed in the book.

The Rt Hon. John Hutton MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, was joined in a panel discussion by Liam Byrne MP, Minister of State for Nationality, Citizenship and Immigration; Patrick Diamond, Director of Policy Network and editor of the publication; and Hilary Cottam, Director of Principle. Respondents included the Rt Hon. Jack Straw MP, Leader of the House of Commons, and Minister of State James Purnell MP.

Public Matters reflects on what has been learnt from the last ten years of government reforms, explores the complexities, uncertainties, and insecurities for society and the individual over the next ten years, and from this sets out proposals for further improvement and modernisation of public services.

The book outlines a radical argument for re-energising the public realm in Britain by recasting the relationship between the state and the citizen with a decisive shift in the balance of power away from the central state towards individuals and their communities
