International Politics and Global Governance
Organised in partnership with the Alfred Herrhausen Society, the international forum of Deutsche Bank , Foresight is an international programme of investigation and debate structured around the challenge of forging common futures in a multi-polar world.
The last decade has seen rising global interdependence accompanied by a rapid shift in the distribution of economic power. From climate change to terrorism to international financial crises, it is apparent that no single state, however rich or powerful, can address the new global challenges on its own. Yet each country approaches these challenges from a perspective shaped by its own background and identity. While global interdependence increases the necessity of international cooperation, increasing multi-polarity makes this process more complicated due to the divergent preferences of the major players.
Through our programme of research, publications and events, including a series of major forums that take place in different parts of the world, we aim to:
- Forge and sustain an international network of leaders, policy-makers and experts from Africa, China, Europe, India, Japan, Latin America, Russia, the United States, West Asia and other parts of the world.
- Develop awareness of the plurality of views, values and identities that characterise our multi-polar order and foster better understanding of the preferences, identities and backgrounds that shape the perspectives of the key global players.
- Compare and contrast the different perspectives on global challenges to identify points of divergence and convergence.
- Encourage an open-ended and critical dialogue on how existing international norms and institutions could be redefined to better suit our multi-polar and interdependent world.
- Promote a fairer and more functional international order that enjoys greater legitimacy.
